Mariano Paredes
20th century
(Veracruz, Mexico, 1919 - 1979, Mexico City)

Paredes moved to Mexico City in 1921. Between 1924 and 1933 he studied drawing under José Clemente Orozco, Fernando Leal and Armando Garcia Nuñez at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (San Carlos) and worked under Koloman Sokol at the Escuela de Artes del Libro. From 1934 to 1938 he was a member of the Liga de Escritores and Artistas Revolucionarios and served as head of the visual arts section of its publication, Frente a Frente. During this time Paredes created illustrations for various pamphlets and leftist magazines. He was a member and administrator of the Taller de Gráfica Popular between 1937 and 1942, when he left the group. He became an art education teacher with the Ministry of Education in 1945. Paredes' work with prints continued; he helped to found the Sociedad Mexicana de Grabadores in 1947 and regularly provided newspaper and book illustrations.
