Claude Lorrain
17th century
(Lorraine, France, 1604 - 1682, Rome, Italy)

The creator of classical landscape painting, Claude Lorrain was an etcher of equivalent beauty and significance. Clear in structure, coherent in illumination, and precise in touch, Le Naufrage is typical of Claude’s first period of printmaking. Its turbulent movement and romantic mood, however, predict aspects of his style after returning to etching in 1651, in turn the dominant strain of classical landscape in the next century. A first state, printed before any alteration or deterioration of the plate, this impression is extraordinarily rich in atmosphere and rare. Steinberg’s six etchings by Claude are all of a quality now unobtainable.
