After training in Leiden with Gerrit Dou, Schalcken established himself as one of the most popular portrait painters in Dordrecht. He was renowned for his lighting effects, evident here in the soft golden light falling over the marble sculpture of Athena in the right background, which is divided by a dark, heavy curtain. To the left a brilliant red sun is setting. The light cast on the subject, however, comes from the front, causing the man’s scroll and collar to glow in stark contrast to his black coat.
