Castiglione was born in Genoa, where he received his early training from two local painters and worked in Van Dyck's studio. During the 1630s Castiglione was in Rome, where he gained a taste for classical subject matter and the ascendant classical Baroque style. Later, he absorbed elements of the High Baroque of Pietro da Cortona and Bernini. In his graphic work, Castiglione is highly original and terribly skillful: he invented the monotype, explored soft-ground etching, and cultivated brush-drawings in oil on paper. By the late 1630s his etchings demonstrate an awareness of Rembrandt that was unique in Italy at that time
