Robert Henri
19th-20th century
(Cincinnati, Ohio, 1865 - 1929, New York City)

Born 1865, Cincinnati; active 1886–88, Philadelphia; 1888–91, Paris; 1891–95, Philadelphia; 1895–1900, Europe and United States; 1900–29, New York (with frequent trips to Europe and throughout the United States); died 1929, New York Henri began his formal training in 1886 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where Thomas Eakins had just resigned over a scandal caused by his preference for teaching with nude models. Henri’s study would take him to Europe several times, but, like Eakins, he ultimately rejected both European and American academicism. He belonged to the Ashcan School, a group of American artists active from the early 1900s up to World War I, whose realistic paintings focused on scenes of everyday city life.
