Carlos Cruz-Diez
20th century
(Caracas, Venezuela, 1923 - 2019, Paris, France)

Born 1923, Caracas, Venezuela; active 1960–2019, Caracas and Paris. During a trip to Europe in 1955–56, Cruz-Diez discovered abstract painting and color theory and was especially intrigued by French painter Georges Seurat’s scientific studies of color. Upon returning to Venezuela, Cruz-Diez became one of the main practitioners of kinetic art, a movement that included artists Jesús Raphael Soto and Alejandro Otero. Together they sought to create the illusion of vibration or motion by careful manipulation of color and form in their geometrically abstract paintings and sculptures. Cruz-Diez is best known for his Physichromie and Chromointerference series of paintings. However, he also delved into other aspects of sensorial experience in various labyrinths and installations that introduced the elements of touch and sound, as well as rooms painted entirely in a single hue that created an all-encompassing, bodily experience of color for the viewer.
