Karl Zerbe
20th century
(Berlin, 1903 - 1972, Tallahassee, Florida)
Born 1903, Berlin; active 1921–24, Munich; 1924–26, Italy; 1926–34, Munich; 1935–55, Boston; 1955–72, Tallahassee, FL; died 1972, Tallahassee
Zerbe, an exile of Nazi Germany, settled in Boston in 1934 where he was one of the main conduits for German Expressionism in the United States. Zerbe’s wiry, nervous lines and garish, sickly color palette call to mind the psychologically probing work of Expressionists like Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka
