Born Hans-Ulrich Ernst in Cologne, Germany. Son of Max Ernst and Louise Amalia Straus, an art critic and journalist. His parents divorced when he was a boy and he was introduced to surrealism while visiting his father in Paris. Began painting in 1938 after arriving in the US. He had no formal art training.
