Norman Wilfred Lewis
20th century
(New York, New York, 1909 - 1979, New York, New York)

Norman Lewis is one of several African American artists who were important in their time as contributors to Abstract Expressionism, but who have only recently received the acclaim and attention that corresponds to their works’ energy, originality and quality. This negligence may have been the result of the recurring critique by proponents of pure abstraction against Lewis’s willingness to embrace figurative elements in his abstract paintings. The more preponderant cause for the disregard, however, is undoubtedly the role race has played in determining the critical and social acceptance of American artists.
