Dean Cornwell was an American illustrator and painter. He worked as a cartoonist in Louisville before moving to Chicago in 1911. He enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied with Harvey Dunn, and worked in the art department of the Chicago Tribune. In 1915 he moved to New York and studied at the Art Students League. Cornwell had a successful career as an illustrator, producing illustrations for magazines, books, and advertisements. In 1927, he traveled to England to study mural painting with Frank Brangwyn. Cornwell later painted murals in Los Angeles, New York, and Boston, as well as murals for the Federal Art Project in North Carolina.
