Bluemner quickly distinguished himself as a talented architect in his native Germany, but under the guidance of Alfred Stieglitz in New York, his focus turned to painting. A vigorous intellectual, Bluemner’s investigations of color theory, Oriental art, and Symbolist painting made a lasting contribution to American abstraction.
