Bluemner quickly distinguished himself as a talented architect in his native Germany, but under the guidance of Alfred Stieglitz in New York, his focus turned to painting. A vigorous intellectual, Bluemner’s investigations of color theory, Oriental art, and Symbolist painting made a lasting contribution to American abstraction. Worked Berlin, 1887-1892; Chicago, 1892-1893; New York, 1893-1895; Chicago, 1895-1899; New York, 1900-1916; Europe, 1912; Bloomfield, New Jersey, 1916-1923; Elizabeth, New Jersey, 1924-1926; South Braintree, Massachusetts, 1926-1938.
