This arresting portrait was previously attributed to the American painter George Luks. Recent research suggests it is more likely by Theresa Bernstein, one of the few female artists associated with the urban realist movement known as the Ashcan School, of which Luks was also a member. Bernstein favored a thick, heavy paint application and a high-keyed color palette, and this work bears stylistic similarity to a number of her known works.
