Object Description: Vertical patches of blue-green and white repeat, emphasizing the eternal crashing of waves on a rocky shoreline. Rolling Breakers is one of 117 pictures George Bellows painted during a summer spent on Monhegan Island, Maine. While they are reminiscent of Winslow Homer’s celebrated images of Maine, Bellows’ seascapes are distinguished by their thick, muscular paint surfaces and their unique manipulation of perspective, which places the viewer virtually in the breaking surf.
