Reacting against the formulae of academic Baroque painting, Creti attempted to return to the style’s first principles in the art of Guido Reni. The same ideality and affirmation of Bolognese tradition are evident in his drawings. Mostly in pen and ink, they are admirable in structure and fluency, but unnatural, rather abstract, in their regularity and abbreviations.
