The museum possesses forty-four engravings by Woollett, most from a collection formed by a direct descendent, David Woollett. The scene, taken from Greek mythology, shows the Theban queen, Niobe, punished for her excessive pride by Apollo and Diana, who are in the process of slaying her seven sons and daughters. Woollett achieved the range of tones and textures that contributes to the sense of violence in this scene by first etching parts of the plate to various depths, then engraving the rest of the image. Bellona is a typically glorious if basically hollow exercise in this purest kind of painting. Already freed from Ricci’s more differentiated handling, but not yet fully dissolved in its drawing and atmospheric in its color, the picture probably dates from the time of Pellegrini’s collaboration with Antonio Bellucci, a Venetian of comparable inclination but lesser brilliance, on a decorative ensemble for the Schloss Bensberg, near Cologne. This is one of three major paintings by Pellegrini in the Collection. For each of the bulls, Zuccaro explores the range of a single color, paying special attention to describing the bulls’ anatomy, texture, and whimsical expressions. But throughout the rest of the drawing, red and black chalks interlace. In the figure of Callisto, the two colors appear equally, gestural lines merely suggesting her body. In the original fresco, Baldassare Peruzzi may have merged imagery from different myths, where Zeus sometimes appears as a white bull. In the story of Callisto, Zeus transforms the nymph and her son, Arcas, into the constellations Ursa Major and Minor.
